Privacy Policy

Last updated: July 2026

Wink is a community and rights platform for LGBTQ+ people, their families, and allies. This policy explains what information we handle, what stays on your device, and how features like posts, communities, messages, the Rights Hub, and your private incident log work with your data.

1. Introduction

Wink ("the App", "we", "our") is a community and rights platform where LGBTQ+ people and allies connect around shared experiences, join communities, read plain-language rights guides, and support one another. We care deeply about your privacy and safety — including your right not to be outed.

We collect as little as possible, keep sensitive material on your device wherever we can, and give you clear controls over who can reach you.

2. Information We Process

Depending on how you use the App, we may process:

  • Profile data: your display name, optional pronouns, short bio, supported topics, and an optional profile photo.
  • Content you create: posts, reactions, poll votes, comments, and community memberships.
  • Messages: direct messages and message requests you send or receive.
  • On-device data: your private incident log, saved guides, drafts, and app preferences.
  • Device & usage data: app version, device identifiers, and aggregate usage events used to improve the App.

Pronouns are always optional, and you can choose "prefer not to say" or write your own.

3. Content You Share

Posts, reactions, and community activity are shared with the Wink community according to where you post them. Please avoid sharing anything that could identify you or others without consent.

Direct messages are delivered to the people you exchange them with. You can only be messaged by people you follow or share a community with, and message requests must be accepted before a conversation begins.

4. Data Kept On Your Device

Your incident log — where you can document an experience of discrimination with a date, place, and description — is stored only on your device. It is never posted to the feed, and it is not sent to us or to any authority. It exists to help you keep a record and find support.

Saved guides, drafts, and preferences are also stored locally. If you delete the App, on-device data is permanently removed.

5. Camera, Microphone & Photos

  • Camera: used only when you choose to take a profile picture or add a photo/video to a post.
  • Photo Library: used only when you pick a photo or video to attach.
  • Microphone: used only while you actively record audio for a short video or dictate a post.

All of these permissions are optional and can be changed anytime in your device Settings. Denying one simply disables that feature.

6. Speech Recognition

If you use the "Dictate" button while composing a post, your speech is converted to text so you can post hands-free. This uses Apple's speech recognition and only runs while you are actively dictating. We do not store your voice recordings.

7. Notifications

With your permission, we may send push notifications about replies, message requests, and community activity. Push delivery uses a device token provided by Apple and Firebase Cloud Messaging. You can turn notifications off at any time in Settings.

8. Analytics & Attribution

We use privacy-respecting analytics (Firebase) to understand which features are useful and to fix problems, and attribution tools (Adjust) to understand how people discover the App. Where required, we ask for your permission through Apple's App Tracking Transparency prompt, and you can decline.

9. Safety & Moderation

Wink has zero tolerance for objectionable content and abusive behavior. You can report or block anyone, and mute conversations. When content or accounts violate our guidelines, we act to remove them. Reports are treated confidentially.

10. Your Choices

  • Edit your profile: change your name, pronouns, bio, and photo anytime.
  • Control messaging: accept or decline requests; block, mute, or report.
  • Manage permissions: revoke camera, microphone, photos, tracking, or notifications in Settings.
  • Delete content: remove your posts and incident-log entries at any time.

11. Children's Privacy

Wink is not directed to children under 13 (or the applicable age of digital consent in your region). We do not knowingly collect personal information from children.

12. Retention & Deletion

We keep community content and account data for as long as your account is active or as needed to provide the service. You can delete your content, and deleting the App removes all on-device data. To request deletion of account data, contact us below.

13. Changes to this Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy as the App evolves or to meet legal requirements. When we do, we will update the "Last updated" date. Our commitment to your safety and to keeping your incident log on your device will not change.
